ISEA's Response to ComEd's "Illinois Smart Solar Alliance"

The Illinois Solar Energy Association (ISEA), established in 1975 to educate and advocate for solar energy in Illinois, has been working for 40 plus years to ensure that Illinois consumers have a smart choice in how they power their homes and businesses. ISEA has 400 members located throughout the state including many small businesses owners.

ISEA has learned that ComEd is attempting create a new group that claims to support solar development in the state. ComEd’s new Illinois Smart Solar Alliance contends to be made up of "likeminded organizations and individuals who seek to grow solar energy in Illinois.” We respect many of the groups that have been identified as members of this new group and invite them to partner with ISEA in advocating for greater access to reliable, affordable solar energy by opening up Illinois to community-owned solar, protecting retail net metering, and developing policies that will expedite the redevelopment of brownfields as solar installations.

ComEd’s creation of this faux group does not distract from the fact that ComEd has spent years blocking reforms that would fix Illinois broken renewable portfolio standard (RPS). A fully fixed RPS would open Illinois to the potential of rooftop and community solar, creating thousands of new clean energy jobs and driving private investment in our communities.

ComEd's real goal in developing and promoting this "Alliance" is to garner public support for their proposed legislation which would limit solar growth and restrict ratepayer's options to benefit from solar energy. The Illinois Solar Energy Association in partnership with solar businesses and homeowners, as well as numerous environmental, public health, community and economic justice organizations invite you to join us in supporting the Illinois Clean Jobs Bill.

Illinois is engaged in an important discussion about our energy future. It is important that community and business groups have a full and transparent understanding of the policies they are being asked to support. Together we can make a real difference in ensuring that clean energy is accessible to everyone in Illinois!
