Village of Oak Park
The Village of Oak Park, installed a 99.45 kilowatt solar system on the Avenue Parking Garage. The solar electric system is among the largest municipal arrays in Illinois, and the largest garage-mounted system in the state. The system utilizes 390 255-watt solar PV modules manufactured in the United States. An innovative mounting system comprised of 50-tons of galvanized steel and extruded aluminum rails allows the array to seamlessly integrate with the garage structure. The power from the array is expected to produce over 106 mega-watt hours per year, providing approximately 20% of the facility’s electricity.
A web-based remote monitoring system allows the public and Village management team to obtain real-time information about the array’s performance. The software captures live input from a dedicated weather station as part of the system
The Village also installed a ten panel solar hot water system on its LEED Silver Public Works building in 2009. The solar thermal system consists of 260 square feet of collectors, which transfer enough thermal energy to heat roughly 300-gallons of hot water a day, an average of 70% of the days across the year. Two 120-gallon commercial storage tanks hold the pre-heated solar water for immediate or future use. This system is a drainback design, with the glycol heat transfer fluid stored in an indoor vessel until its needed, increasing the efficiency of the system
Exelon Pavilions
The four Exelon Pavilions, which use state-of-the art technology to convert solar energy into electricity, are an integral part of Chicago’s efforts to become the most environmentally-friendly city in North America. Together, the Pavilions provide enough electricity annually to power 14 star-rated energy-efficient houses in Chicago.
The northwest and northeast pavilions are minimalist black cubes designed to complement the neighboring Harris Theater.
The northwest pavilion houses the Millennium Park Welcome Center, along with an Exelon energy display area
