    PV 101 (Introduction to Photovoltaics)
    Course Description

This one-day course uses a combination of lecture and classroom activities to teach the basics of solar electric systems. Participants will learn how photovoltaic (PV) systems work, diagram the four PV system types, describe and identify components, understand the best application and limitations of each system type, define the solar window, make energy efficiency recommendations, estimate system loads, and understand the basics of PV site assessment.

The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) and ISEA  train individuals to provide renewable energy assessment and consumer education, with Programs accredited by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) that provide skills and training needed by professionals engaging consumers in renewable energy systems for their homes and businesses.

    Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

    Define photovoltaics
    Explain how photovoltaic systems work
    Diagram the four system types
Describe and identify components of a photovoltaic system
Identify the best application and limitations of each system type
    Define the solar window
    Use Ohm's Law
    Read an electric utility bill
    Estimate electrical loads
    Make energy efficiency recommendations

SCARCE has been educating schools, businesses, and municipalities on environmental safe practices and products. This Green Fair is an opportunity to educate the community on a variety of green initiatives and products.  If we can make greener choices at the point of purchase we can prevent some pollution or destruction of resources from the start.

SCARCE will have a kids corner with recycled paper making and other earth friendly crafts.  Lots of hands on STEM & STEAM activities for all ages.  Get green ideas for home improvement, landscaping, decorating, energy efficiency, backyard composting, water conservation, smart appliances and much, much more!

SCARCE is raffling off some really great items:  A rain barrel, a worm bin, recycled garden art, a two night stay and dinner at the Westin in Lombard and Blackhawk tickets!  Tickets are only $1 each!

SCARCE will feature Nature Cat at our Green Fair.  He is the star of a new children’s show on WTTW- Channel 11.  He will be at the fair for a meet & great and photo op for kids and families.  Come out and meet Nature Cat from 11-2.

    PV 201 (PV Site Assessment)

The Site Assessment Certificate Program is a program of the MREA offered through the Illinois Solar Energy Association (ISEA), a recognized training provider . The MREA/ISEA  Site Assessment Certificate Program trains individuals to provide site-specific renewable energy assessment and consumer education.Since August of 2012, the PV Site Assessment  Certificate Program has been accredited by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC).

The MREA /ISEA Site Assessor Certificate provides skills training needed by professionals engaging consumers in renewable energy systems for their homes and businesses. Site assessors evaluate the energy consumption of a household or business, as well as the solar or wind resource at the location. They help clients understand system options and their benefits. They work with clients to recommend the site and size of the solar or wind system that will best fit their needs . Site assessors also estimate system production and identify the cost, incentives, and financing options available.

    Course Description
Participants in this eight-hour course will learn how to perform a PV site assessment for a home or small business. The course will cover site assessment tools, load analysis, energy efficiency recommendations, array placement options, basic system sizing, cost estimates, and evaluating existing infrastructure on site. Participants will learn how to access online tools for solar resource analysis, PV system performance calculators, and incentives.

    Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
    • Use site assessment tools
    • Size a PV system
    • Recommend a PV system type to meet a home or owner's goals
    • Identify and recommend steps for energy efficiency
    • Perform a load analysis
    • Identify and recommend array placement options
    • Quantify the solar resource
    • Provide a general cost estimate
    • Write a PV site assessment report
    • Use web-based performance calculators
    • Provide installer and equipment vendor information
